Kraft paper bags, with their environmentally friendly, durable, and biodegradable properties, are widely used in food packaging, shopping bags, and gift bags. However, during the bag-making process, the strength and airtightness of the seal are key indicators affecting their performance. If the seal is weak or leaks air, not only will the contents become damp and deteriorate, but the overall strength of the packaging will also be reduced, impacting the user experience. To ensure a strong and leak-free seal on kraft paper bags, a comprehensive approach is needed, encompassing material selection, process optimization, equipment debugging, operational procedures, and quality inspection.

Material selection is fundamental to ensuring sealing quality. The material of the kraft paper directly affects the sealing adhesion. Kraft paper with high fiber density and moderate surface roughness should be prioritized, as this provides better friction and bonding area, enhancing the adhesion of glue or hot melt adhesive. Simultaneously, the appropriate kraft paper thickness should be selected based on the characteristics of the packaged contents. For example, thicker kraft paper is needed for packaging heavy or sharp objects to improve tear resistance; while for packaging lightweight items, a thinner thickness can be used to reduce costs. Furthermore, to further improve the airtightness of the seal, a plastic film (such as PE or PP) can be laminated to the inner layer of the kraft paper. The heat-sealing property of the plastic layer achieves a more reliable seal.

Optimizing the sealing process is crucial. Common kraft paper bag sealing methods include adhesive bonding and hot-melt sealing. For adhesive bonding, a special adhesive should be selected based on the kraft paper material, such as water-based or animal glue. These adhesives are environmentally friendly and have strong adhesion, but the amount and uniformity of application must be strictly controlled. Insufficient adhesive will result in weak adhesion, while excessive adhesive may overflow, contaminating the bag or causing mold growth. Hot-melt sealing involves heating and melting a hot-melt adhesive strip, fusing it with the kraft paper surface to form a sealing layer. This process requires precise control of heating temperature and sealing pressure. Excessive temperature can cause kraft paper carbonization or hot-melt adhesive aging, while insufficient temperature will prevent the adhesive strip from melting sufficiently, affecting the sealing effect. Simultaneously, the sealing pressure must be evenly distributed to avoid excessive local pressure that could deform the kraft paper or cause the adhesive strip to shift.

Equipment debugging and maintenance are critical to sealing quality. The sealing module of the bag-making machine needs to be calibrated regularly to ensure precise alignment between the heating element and the pressure roller. If the heating element is misaligned, it will cause uneven localized temperatures, leading to weak seals or air leaks. If the pressure roller is worn, it will not provide sufficient pressure, affecting the penetration and fusion of adhesive or hot melt glue. In addition, the equipment needs to be cleaned regularly to prevent dust or glue residue buildup from affecting heating efficiency or contaminating the bag. For hot melt sealing equipment, the hot melt glue strip delivery system also needs to be checked to ensure a smooth supply of glue strips without the risk of breakage, preventing sealing interruptions due to missing glue strips.

Strict adherence to operating procedures is crucial for ensuring sealing quality. Operators must receive professional training and be familiar with the bag-making machine's operating procedures and precautions. For example, before starting the equipment, the tension of the kraft paper must be checked for uniformity to avoid misalignment due to tension differences; when changing adhesive or hot melt glue strips, residue must be thoroughly cleaned to prevent mixing of different materials from affecting the bonding effect; during production, sealing quality should be checked regularly to promptly identify and adjust abnormal parameters. In addition, it is necessary to control the temperature and humidity of the production environment to avoid changes in kraft paper shrinkage or glue curing speed due to environmental factors, which could affect the sealing stability.

The application of auxiliary processes can further improve the airtightness of the seal. For kraft paper bags that need to be stored or transported for a long time, reinforcing strips or patches can be added to the seal. Reinforcing strips are usually made of the same kraft paper as the bag body and are fixed to the inside of the seal with glue or hot melt adhesive to enhance the tear resistance of the seal; patches are made of plastic or metal and cover the outside of the seal, forming a double seal through mechanical pressing or glue bonding. Furthermore, for scenarios with high airtightness requirements, such as food packaging, vacuuming or gas filling processes can be used after sealing to further remove air from the bag and reduce the risk of oxidation and mold growth.

Quality inspection is the final guarantee to ensure the sealing is qualified. After production, the kraft paper bags must undergo comprehensive inspection, including visual inspection and performance testing. Visual inspection primarily checks whether the seal is smooth, free of excess glue or hot melt adhesive residue. Performance testing simulates real-world usage scenarios, performing tensile and airtightness tests on the seal. The tensile test uses specialized equipment to apply gradually increasing tension to the seal, observing for cracking or delamination. The airtightness test involves inflating or vacuuming the bag to check for leaks at the seal. For non-conforming products, the causes must be analyzed promptly, and process parameters adjusted to ensure stable quality in subsequent production.

Ensuring the seal's strength and airtightness during kraft paper bag manufacturing requires a comprehensive approach, encompassing material selection, process optimization, equipment debugging, operational procedures, and quality inspection. Through scientific material selection, meticulous processes, rigorous operation, and comprehensive testing, the sealing quality of kraft paper bags can be significantly improved, meeting the needs of various usage scenarios.
